The Life and Legacy of Jackie Spellman

Early Life and Passion for Sport

In March 2008, Jackie Spellman was a healthy 24-year-old with a lively sense of humor and an energetic outlook on life. She had recently completed a sports marketing program with Atlanta Spirit, owners of the NBA Hawks and NHL Thrashers, and accepted a role with the Houston Texans’ marketing group. A former college soccer player and lifelong sports fan, she looked forward to moving closer to family and beginning a new chapter.

First Signs of Illness

Shortly after arriving in Houston, Jackie noticed a rash and unexplained bruises. She sought medical care when the symptoms persisted. A physician ordered blood tests, which revealed abnormal results. She was referred to a hematologist, but before her appointment, she developed severe symptoms and was admitted to a hospital emergency department.

Tests confirmed that Jackie had acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. She was immediately transferred to MD Anderson Cancer Center, where treatment began without delay.

The Fight Against AML

Jackie faced the illness with determination and courage. Treatment included chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and extended hospital stays. Despite setbacks and repeated remissions followed by relapses, she remained positive. Support from family, friends, and medical staff helped sustain her strength. Even during the most challenging moments, time spent with her young nephews and niece brought joy and laughter.

Loss and Legacy

On April 28, 2009, after 14 months of treatment, Jackie’s life ended at the age of 25. She had been a student-athlete at Northeastern University, an honors graduate, a devoted family member, and an individual whose love for sports and life touched many.

Memories remain of her dedication on the soccer field, her enjoyment of family vacations in New England, her enthusiasm for music, and her excitement for favorite teams and players.
